Day 3

Today the trail drops down to the Chhomrong Khola and again we continue climbing to Khuldighar at 2380 metres where there used to be an ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area) Check post. There is a clearing in the forest a little further on, from which, the route travels very steeply down a rock bank then levels out, running through thickets of bamboo at the bottom of the gorge, keeping always on the west side of the river.

Dovan, Nepal is a small village along the Annapurna Base Camp trekking route. Prior to the 1970’s, there was no village. This area was built up around tourism to help accommodate the people passing through. Now there are several teahouses and a bakery!

An interesting fact is that prior to 1970, women were not allowed in the area. The mountains here were considered so holy by the locals, that a woman might taint the land as women were seen as impure due to their periods. Even today, animals may not be slaughtered in this area and no one is supposed to carry certain meats like buffalo or chicken as it may upset the gods. In fact, those animals can’t even enter the area alive as they are considered impure.

There’s a temple along the hiking trail between Dovan and Himalaya with a gorgeous waterfall covering an entire wall across from it called Pujinam Baraha Mandir. This is the most sacred temple in the area and this is the point where animals can’t cross. Each year the locals do a large puja (religious ceremonial offering) to the gods in June or July. They believed that a sort of oracle who once lived here would predict the future when he spoke.

The village of Dovan was built out of necessity when tourists began to visit. Prior to the 1970’s there was no village and only shepherds passed through here on the way to the mountains to let their sheep graze.

Meals : Breakfast Only

Overnight at: Tea House in Dovan (settlement)

Day 4

Today because of the altitude and risk of snow avalanches in the area that we need to cross in the next morning. Our day begins with the climb through bamboo, then rhododendron forests to Himalayan Hotel and on to Hinko cave. After crossing the cave,  the trail climbs past the Machhapuchhre Base Camp, which isn’t really a base camp since climbing the mountain is not permitted. Since it is totally surrounded by mountains, this area is known as the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Machhapuchhre Base Camp was built entirely for tourism starting in the 1970’s and has developed into one of the nicest places to stay along the route. On a clear day, you get an up close look at the famous fishtail mountain as well as the Annapurna Range in the distance.

Machhapuchhre is one of the holiest peaks in Nepal, and it’s now illegal to try to climb it. It’s never been submitted and that first attempt was also the last. This makes the name “Machhapuchhre Base Camp” a bit inaccurate since there’s no real need for a “Base Camp” for Machhapuchhre.

Before trekkers and mountaineers, this area was used only for sheep grazing. Shepherds would bring their sheep in the summer. After the first successful summit of Annapurna I in 1950, the area became popular among adventurers and explorers. By the 1970’s, the trail was full of trekkers who needed lodging and the first tea houses were built in 1975 to accommodate them.

Meals: Breakfast Only

Day 5

Today we will wake up early and walk towards our main destination. An spectacular two hour trek from Machhapuchhre Base Camp takes you to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) at elevations of 4130 metres.

We are now in the very heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary as the valley widens under the grinding power of the glacier. The multi-summit mountain wall of Annapurna South (7,219m) to Annapurna I (8,091m) now towers in front of us. We stand in a snowy mountain caldron of unmatched natural beauty. Take your time to soak in the scenery and take lots and lots of photos.

This area, once used for sheep grazing by locals, is now a popular tourist destination due to its gorgeous 360 degree views and the fame it gained from being the first 8,000m peak ever to be submitted.

Annapurna I is 8,091m (26,545 ft) high in altitude and it was the first mountain above 8,000m to be successfully climbed. In 1950, Maurice Herzog and his French expedition succeeded in reaching the summit of what is now known as one of the most technically challenging mountains in the world. After that, Annapurna became famous worldwide as others wanted to attempt to follow in their footsteps.

ABC Base Camp became the starting point for future expeditions as the French had succeeded in climbing up the north face of the mountain. By the 1970’s, trekkers started arriving, not to summit the mountain, but to reach the base camp. The Annapurna Base Camp trek became the first in Nepal (local’s claim). In the 70’s, teahouses started being built to meet the demands of tourism. Today, the small village is growing larger due to peak season being so crowded that they often find themselves running out of beds.

Your guide will point out the main mountain peaks and the routes brave climbers have followed to reach their summit.

After spending some time here at the base camp we will hike for another 6 hours as we retrace our steps to Bamboo. The trail drops 1,830m/ 5,577 feet, to the bank of Modi Khola to Bamboo at 2,300m/ 7,693 feet.

Meals : Breakfast Only

Overnight at: Tea House in Bamboo (settlement)

Day 6

Today’s route descends to the Chhomrong Khola before climbing the stairs back to Sinuwa and then to Chhomrong. It then descends steeply to Jhinu Danda for almost 2hrs.

Jhinu Danda is counted among the best places while trekking to Annapurna Base Camp. Built on the river banks of mighty Modi Khola and encircled by the beautiful trees, hot water will relax your body and the eyes will be mesmerised from the panoramic views of the river. Just close your eyes and feel the sound of the river filling your head.

After the day-long trek, your tired body will be comfortable in the hot water. You will find the pools filled with tourists. It is up to the time, if it allows, to come out of the Jhinu Danda Hot Springs and take a dip in the cold river water running near to the Jhinu Danda. After dipping your body in the natural hot water and intermittently cold river water, head back for dinner and peaceful night sleep. You will be so refreshed and elated that you might return to the Jhinu Danda Hot Springs in the early morning for a bath. Normally, travellers come to this place before heading to Pokhara.

Day 7

Today, we will drive back from Jhinu Danda (1780m) to Pokhara by Jeep. It takes 3 ½ to 4 hours by Jeep. The road descends to the Komrong Khola and gets to New Bridge, where you follow the river bank and through the forest. Here we see many trekkers, who are going to the finest trekking. Arriving back in Pokhara, you'll bid farewell to the majestic mountains that have accompanied you throughout your adventure. It's a moment to reflect on the experiences gained, the challenges overcome, and the memories made with your guide and fellow trekkers. Pokhara, with its serene lakes and vibrant atmosphere, provides a fitting end to your trekking expedition.
