Overview

Nestled in the remote Dolpo region of Nepal, Shey Phoksundo Lake stands as the deepest lake in the country, celebrated for its mesmerising beauty and sacred status. This pristine lake, revered by the local Dolpa community, captivates with its striking aquamarine hue, unblemished by aquatic life, which adds to its crystal-clear allure. Often referred to by seasoned travellers as the "jewel of Dolpo," Shey Phoksundo Lake offers an exceptionally refreshing visual experience. Encircled by towering, snow-capped peaks, the lake provides an extraordinarily satisfying vista.

Adjacent to this enchanting lake is Shey-Phoksundo National Park, established in 1984. Covering a vast area of 3,555 square kilometres, it is Nepal's largest national park. The park’s primary mission is to conserve the unique Himalayan ecosystem, featuring Tibetan-style flora and fauna, while safeguarding endangered species like the snow leopard and musk deer.

Dolpo itself is a secluded region in Mid-Western Nepal, historically intertwined with Tibet. Until 1990, it was a restricted area, accessible only to a few, which has helped it retain its pristine charm. Trekkers visiting Dolpo can marvel at the stunning views of Phoksundo Lake and immerse themselves in the unique cultural blend of Ringmo village, where Nepalese and Tibetan traditions converge. The region’s monsoon is shielded by the Dhaulagiri range, allowing for trekking primarily during the summer months. The lake, steeped in Buddhist legend, prohibits swimming and bathing, preserving its purity. The only inhabitants are occasional migratory birds, reinforcing the lake's untouched and serene environment.
